The Downtown Ambassador Program is a spin-off from work started by the 3rd Way Committee, which was organized in 2006 to foster cooperation between the downtown business community and downtown social service agencies. In operation since September 2008, The Ambassadors program currently operates with generous support from MVP Health Care, the Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority, downtown Schenectady businesses and Proctors. The program is overseen by senior management at the City Mission of Schenectady.
The Downtown Ambassadors Program was developed in collaboration with Mayor Stratton's office, the 3rd Way Committee, Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority, Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corporation and Proctors. The Ambassadors have been greeting visitors to the downtown, primarily around Proctors events, since September, 2008.
Ambassadors are recruited and trained by The City Mission to be positioned at key locations during downtown events. Often working with community volunteers, Ambassadors provide information to visitors and offer a welcoming greeting. The Ambassadors receive valuable job training and skills development and, in return, they are highly effective at working with typical downtown visitor issues.
The most valuable impact, however, is the exchange of warm greetings and a pleasant smile. In the words of one Ambassador: "Imagine a job where, on every shift, a couple of hundred people say 'thank you.' That's what happens."
