Films from the American Genre Film Archive

Dario Argento’s BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE

Newly restored for theatrical presentation, Argento’s first film as director is easily the most influential Italian thriller ever made. Period.

Sam, an American writer (Tony Musante), has been living in Rome with his girlfriend (Suzy Kendall). While visiting an art gallery, he witnesses an unsuccessful murder attempt by a mysterious figure, and – as the assailant is believed to be an infamous serial killer – the police confiscate Sam’s passport, as he is now a key witness in their ongoing investigation. Eyewitnesses, of course, are legendary for confusing or misinterpreting details, so fearing he may have missed some vital clue, Sam takes up an investigation of his own, only to discover that he may be the killer’s next intended victim.

Argento’s shockingly keen artistic eye, combined with a score by the great Ennio Morricone, cinematography by Apocalypse Now lenser Vittorio Storaro, and editing by multi-award-winning slicer, Franco Fraticelli, made BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE both a surprise international hit, and an absolute must-see for Euro thriller fans today. In Italian with English subtitles. Rated PG. 98 minutes.

As with other ICFS events, expect prizes, surprises, comfy couches and absolutely killer drink specials!
