An icon of psychedelic pop culture, Yellow Submarine is a colorful musical spectacle brimming with peace, love, and hope for all ages! Propelled by Beatles songs, including “Eleanor Rigby,” “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “All You Need Is Love,” “When I’m Sixty-Four,” and so very many more, Yellow Submarine was instantly recognized as a landmark achievement. Even beyond all the glorious music, it is a truly sublime work-of-art. Heinz Edelmann’s inspired art direction conjures up a non-stop parade of wildly different styles and techniques. From the paper-doll residents of Pepperland, to the tinted photography of Liverpool’s soot-covered roofs and smokestacks, to the kaleidoscopic color-splashed rotoscoping of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the film is simply a joy. Now, for its 50th Anniversary, both the audio and the artwork have been painstakingly restored, and – due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original art – the restoration was done frame-by-frame, totally by hand, without the assistance of computerized automation.
