The American Film Institute Essentials

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers star in Swing Time, the 1936 epitome of classic dance cinema. When John “Lucky” Garnett (Astaire) loses a bet and must raise $25,000 to marry his fiancée, he heads to New York City to make up the funds. He meets Penny Carroll (Rogers), a dance school instructor, and woos her with his charm and dance skill.

Featuring the Oscar-winning song The Way You Look Tonight and the classic Never Gonna Dance, Swing Time rocketed Astaire and Rogers to international stardom and secured its place at the top of the annals of American dance film.
