Starting in January 2008 the GE Theatre at Proctors, working with Emerging Pictures, in a regional exclusive, will bring the Operas from La Scala and two other prestigious Italian opera houses to the Capital region through digital high definition broadcast on the enormous iwerks screen. The operas have been recorded live in gorgeous HDTV format with Dolby Digital sound that takes full advantage of the state of the art equipment and facilities at Proctors. The series begins with Verdi's Aida on Friday, January 11th.2:00 PM
From the first show on, under Daniel Barenboim’s baton and with Patrice Chéreau’s direction, the 2007-2008 season embarks on an international path, which yet does not neglect the Theatre’s Italian identity and roots. On the contrary, it exalts them, but with an eye on Europe. Tristan too, especially Tristan, is a project that has been conceived as the inseparable union of the title with the conductor, the director and the singers. Tristan is the project that Daniel Barenboim, one of the greatest Wagnerian maestros, had been dreaming of staging with Patrice Chéreau for 25 years, soon after the director left one of the most memorable marks in the story of staging on the Ring. A quarter of a century has gone by since the Wagner of Bayreuth (1976-1980), a period of time that Chéreau has judged long enough to put distance between him and that Tetralogy (conducted by Boulez) and to dispel doubts: the dream of two excellent Wagnerians is coming true today at La Scala. Particularly worth noting in the cast are Ian Storey, Waltraud Meier, Michelle De Young, Gerd Grokowski, Matti Salminen and Will Hartmann.
