Starting in January 2008 the GE Theatre at Proctors, working with Emerging Pictures, in a regional exclusive, will bring the Operas from La Scala and two other prestigious Italian opera houses to the Capital region through digital high definition broadcast on the enormous iwerks screen. The operas have been recorded live in gorgeous HDTV format with Dolby Digital sound that takes full advantage of the state of the art equipment and facilities at Proctors. The series begins with Verdi's Aida on Friday, January 11th.
Maria Stuarda by Donizetti, one of the titles dedicated to the private and dramatic sphere of the British crown, is the Italian pearl that follows and mirrors the Wagnerian premiere. The work has left great memories here at La Scala, and it was right that an Italian director who is familiar with these memories should be entrusted with it: Pier Luigi Pizzi. This serious Donizetti requests two prima donnas: Mariella Devia and Anna Caterina Antonacci will be them.
