May 20 - 23, 2008
Starting in January 2008 the GE Theatre at Proctors, working with Emerging Pictures, in a regional exclusive, will bring the Operas from La Scala and two other prestigious Italian opera houses to the Capital region through digital high definition broadcast on the enormous iwerks screen. The operas have been recorded live in gorgeous HDTV format with Dolby Digital sound that takes full advantage of the state of the art equipment and facilities at Proctors. The series begins with Verdi's Aida on Friday, January 11th.
For the 150th anniversary of his birth, Puccini will be at the centre of the 2008 program. Il trittico perfectly exemplifies the 2007-2008 season and clarifies our direction: to program a title with the conductor and the director, for a conductor and for a director, without leaving the essence of the project to chance, or to the possible availability of one or the other. Riccardo Chailly is a conductor especially in tune with Puccini’s language, and has dedicated a great part of his work to the rediscovery of Puccini’s early pages and to the re-interpretation of well-known works. Luca Ronconi is a talented director able to unite and at the same time give a different character to three operas like Il tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. The three casts were chosen accordingly.
