Leevi Ernits / Off the picture plane
Fenimore Asset Gallery (2nd floor)
curated by Mitch Messmore
Abstract paintings created with starch based paste from this Estonian artist.  Each painting is a conversation between the innovative medium and the mind. The paste if full of poorly understood energy that manifests itself into an image never entirely expected beforehand.
Leevi Ernits was born in Estonia during the Brezhnev administration. After completing a degree in architecture in Tallin University of Applied Sciences and working as an architectural intern in Tallinn she took off for travel and somehow ended up on the eastern coast of America. The exploration of the American continent included studies in painting and sculpture over several years in different studios culminating in a BFA in painting from SUNY Purchase. After collecting a professional degree in Interior Design from New York School of Interior design, she started her own design firm LE Design, LLC. Her Art/design studieo is located in the mid-Hudson valley.

Imam Rastanagara / Another World
Albany International room
curated by Mitch Messmore
This exhibition has been inspired by community, culture, faith & family. These paintings were made by the artist from the first to the last step. The six most recent works were made here in the US, beginning with canvas that was bought and prepared in Indonesia. After arriving in Schenectady, Imam stretched the canvas on to wood found in his brother-in-laws workshop. Each painting is a hand-made piece of art, as unique as the man who created them.

Imam Budiono Rastanagara (March 23, 1966) was born and raised in the city of Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. In 1984 he moved to the city of Jogjakarta to study graphic design at the Indonesian Art Institute.  During his time as a student in this small city, which is a center of traditional and modern arts & culture, Imam began spending time on Malioboro Street.  Malioboro Street is a place where artists both young and old gather. He joined together with a group of street musicians to form the ethnic rock band KPJM: Kelompok Penyanyi Jalanan Malioboro (The Malioboro Street Musicians Group). To this day he continues to make music with this band, playing a variety of percussion instruments including the gendang (traditional Javanese drum), tabla and djembe.
In 1993, Imam was active in the formation of an artist collective which goes by the name Joglo Jago. This group consists of well-known artists from all over Indonesia, and also supports new and upcoming artists and musicians. In 1999, Imam was a founding member of KSM: Kommunitas Seni Malioboro (The Malioboro Art Community). This collective supports artists who otherwise would have little access to performance and exhibition space. Imam strives to promote street artists creativity by supporting a variety of art events with the motto Seni untuk Kebersamaan (Art for Unity).
Imam lives at the beach in Indonesia on the south coast of the island of Java with his wife and twin daughters. They are currently making plans to create an art and environmental center, Padepokan Padma Kidul (The South Lotus Learning Haven). Many thanks to Proctors Theater and the friends and family of Schenectady who helped bring this show to fruition.

Chenille stems, steel - 2007
Ginger Ertz is a Schenectady sculptor who works primarily in chenille stems (pipe-cleaners).  While her work is abstract, it often recalls undersea creatures or plant forms.  She is also interested in depicting the movement of water.  The repetitive nature of this work is a meditative process which allows her hands time to make decisions as the work unfolds intuitively.  Chenille stems are the perfect medium for her:  the wire center creates the structure, while the fibers create a surface that recalls the comfort of a favorite bathrobe or bedspread, and still invokes the humor and playfulness of a child’s art material.  Ginger is the recipient of a 2009 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.  Her work is exhibited throughout the region and New England.  In addition to her artwork, Ginger is a Museum Educator at the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.
