1984 (John Hurt) - Official Trailer

1984 (1984)
In remembrance of the great John Hurt, Proctors proudly presents 1984.  Based on George Orwell's classic novel, Hurt portrays Winston Smith, a government employee whose job involves the rewriting of history in a manner that casts his country's leaders in a charitable light. His trysts with Julia (Suzanna Hamilton) provide him with his only measure of enjoyment, yet lawmakers frown on the relationship.  Though they try to escape Big Brother's listening and viewing devices, in this closely monitored society... there is no escape from Big Brother.  Rated R for nudity, sexuality and some violence. 115 minutes.
Tuesday, April 4 at 4:30pm & 7pm

April 4 is the designated National Screening Day for 1984.  The date was chosen because it is the day that Orwell's protagonist defies Big Brother by keeping a personal diary.

The 7pm screening is to be introduced by Daily Gazette columnist, Sara Foss.
Topic: The Value of a Free and Independent Press.
"The novel "1984" offers a frightening vision of a world where the only source of information is the lies and propaganda disseminated by the government. The leaders of this totalitarian regime recognize that journalism, an understanding of history and the ability to question authority are important checks on power. Without a free and independent press, misinformation and falsehoods take the place of truth, and little can be done to hold corrupt and powerful leaders accountable."

Additionally, The Open Door bookstore will have copies of Orwell's book - and others - on sale in the lobby between screenings. They will be joined by at least 20 other local organizations as part of a Capital Region Community Action Fair, an event that has been organized by the Guilderland Huddle Action Project, and is scheduled to run at from 5pm-9pm. Admission to the Fair is free.

All proceeds from screening to support Proctors educational and community-related programming.
