THE GREAT SILENCE (1968)
Stunningly restored for it's 50th anniversary, THE GREAT SILENCE is widely considered among the very best and most influential Euro-Westerns ever made.  On an unforgiving, snow swept frontier, a group of bloodthirsty bounty hunters, led by the vicious Loco (Klaus Kinski; NosferatuFitzcarraldo) prey upon the impoverished victims of a corrupt banking system after they take to the hills and are forced to steal for survival.  One-by-one, as the price on each unwilling outlaw's head is collected, only a mute gunslinger named Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant; The Conformist) stands between the innocent refuges and the greed and corruption that the bounty hunters represent. Still, in this harsh, brutal world, the lines between right and wrong aren't always so clear, and good does not always triumph. With superb photography and a haunting score by maestro Ennio Morricone, this is director Sergio Corbucci's (Django) masterpiece... a bleak, brilliant and violent vision of an immoral, honorless America, that distributors were afraid to release in the U.S. until now.  Also starring Frank Wolff and Vonetta McGee.  Not rated.  English/Italian with English subtitles.  105 minutes.
