After a sold-out show last season, the Thruway A Cappella Sing-Off is back for another round of intense and imaginative vocal performances by some of the best in the Northeast!
Local a cappella groups from Union College battle against performers from Boston and Connecticut in one fantastic evening of sound. This year's competitors are the Dutch Pipers, the Eliphalets, the Garnet Minstrelles, Co Co Beaux, The Crosstones and Aural Fixation.
The Dutch Pipers is Union College’s longest standing student musical group and are the reigning champions of the Thruway. Starting as the Union Glee Club, then transitioning to the all-male Dutch Pipers in 1955, the Pipers has enjoyed a long tradition of fine music and solidarity as a group. As a student-run organization they maintain performance freedom within their repertoire.
Founded seven years ago, the Eliphalets are Union’s co-ed a cappella group. Through constant performances both on campus and in the community, the group has formed its own unique identity. In previous years, the Eliphalets have recorded a collection of traditional Union songs and a more current mix of music. Constant alumni support has allowed the Eliphalets to commit to recording and has also given then the opportunity to perform at other colleges.
Founded in 1986, the Garnet Minstrelles are Union’s all female a cappella group. The Minstrelles are made up of a diversegroup of women from across all disciplines at Union. With a repertoire spanning 60’s pop to today’s top 40, the Minstrelles have recorded albums, performed at numerous events on and off campus, and frequently sing at Union hockey games.
Composed of fourteen exquisitely handsome gentlemen, the Co Co Beaux is Connecticut College’s only all-male a cappella group. Founded in 1978, the Beaux continues to entertain a growing community of listeners throughout the Northeast. The Beaux maintains a number of long-held traditions, including snapping while performing and wearing blue button-downs and neckties for every show. Together, the guys consider themselves to be more than just a group of singers, but an extended family of brothers.
Founded in 1996, The Crosstones is Bates College's oldest co-ed a cappella group. The Crosstones have always been known for our down-to-earth nature, energy, and dedication. We've been performing both nationally and locally for over 15 years, choosing from all genres, ranging from Motown to pop to classic rock. Our cover of “The Fear” by Lily Allen was featured on Voices Only 2012, and they are releasing a new CD soon!
