There will be high-flying gingerbread men and other dazzling feats performed during “Cirque Dreams Holidaze,” which has a grandiose wonderland of holiday spirit. There will be four performances at Proctors the weekend of Friday, Dec. 28.

— Gingerbread men, toy soldiers and snowmen will come to life to perform daring and mesmerizing theatrical performances with holiday cheer aimed at entertaining children — and the simply young at heart.

Before ringing in the New Year, the Mainstage at Proctors will round off the holiday season with four performances from Friday, Dec. 28, to Sunday, Dec. 30, of “Cirque Dreams Holidaze,” which is created and directed by Neil Goldberg. An international cast of more than 30 performers from nine different countries brings the holidays to life by donning intricate costumes and soaring with acrobatics. Cirque Dreams Holidaze travels to Proctors

By PHIL DREW

The irony is that Goldberg has grown up to be the creator of a fusion of the two — a kind of circus designed specifically for the proscenium stage. Or, more accurately, a cirque — an old-fashioned European term for something that doesn’t quite line up with the American-style traveling circus, like the animals and trapezes of Barnum and Bailey.

“It dated back to the 1890s,” he said. “Jules Verne actually built a building in downtown Paris called Cirque Municipale. People would come every night for a showcase of unusual talent, something we might call performance art.”

A CHORUS LINE SHIMMERS says DiMaggio (Review)

‘A Chorus Line’ Shimmers on Proctors (Review)

A Chorus Line-Reviewed

12/14-16

At Proctors

Schenectady, NY

proctors.org

One singular sensation, every little

step she takes

(‘oh one and two and three and-’)

One, thrilling combination, every move that she makes

(‘hips back, head high’)

One smile and suddenly nobody else will do

You know you’ll never be lonely with you-know-who”

There are few moments in theater more stunning and breathtaking, not to mention foot stomping and dazzling, than the twenty glimmering golden dancers prancing across the stage in A Chorus Line, bobbing their hats, swinging their shoulders, and tapping their way to stardom, to the delight of the audience, singing “One, sin-gu-lar sen-sat-ion–” This is the signature song ‘One’ we came to hear, and these are the signature dancers we came to see. But by the time this finale arrives, we know them: We know who they are, where they’re from, how old they are. Yes. But we also know their fears, their hopes, their dreams, and the inner secrets they would never dare share with anyone else except us, the audience. We watch this chorus line develop, from interview to glorious finale, and we watch it today with the same fervor we’ve been watching it with for nearly forty years.

And so it goes with A Chorus Linerunning this weekend, only at Proctors.

Capital Rep to present one-man 'Wonderful Life'

'This Wonderful Life' a take on the Capra classic
By Michael Eck
Published 4:19 p.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Larry Daggett is playing George Bailey at Capital Repertory Theatre in the troupe's holiday production of "This Wonderful Life."

It's not like that's any big leap. Plenty of actors have tackled the classic Jimmy Stewart film role and tried to translate it to the stage.

But Daggett is also playing George's wife, Mary, and working hard to make her sound like Donna Reed. And he's playing Mr. Potter, with an edge like Lionel Barrymore. In fact, Daggett is playing the entire town of Bedford Falls, as well as an angel named Clarence.

Whew!

Actor takes on ‘Wonderful Life’ in one-man show

ALBANY — It’s one of the enduring messages of the holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” — that each life touches so many others, beyond our imagining.

So it is fitting, if somewhat daunting, for a single actor to stride onstage and attempt not merely to touch multiple lives, but to enact them — to impersonate the many characters in the mythical hamlet of Bedford Falls.

Most importantly, he must tell the tale of George Bailey, the ordinary guy who finds out one magical Christmas Eve that his existence is extraordinary.

That is the challenge this Christmas season for Larry Daggett at Capital Repertory Theatre.

"This Wonderful Life"

Where: Capital Repertory Theatre, 111 N. Pearl St., Albany

When: Nov. 27 through Dec. 22 — 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and Wednesday, Dec. 5.

'Wicked': It's just special in Schenectady

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

The author saw "Wicked" at Proctors last weekend — and says that the production is awesome. “I feel very strongly about 'Wicked' and the way it always seems to turn out so special when it's at Proctors," she said.

Let me preface this by saying "Wicked" is my all- time favorite musical and so my opinions of the production as a whole are going to be very high. And, if I could play any role in any musical (and had the talent to do so) I would play Elphaba.

The show is about so much more than finding out what happened in Oz before that little farm girl dropped in. It's about standing up for what you believe in, fighting for what's right, even if it's not necessarily what's easy. "Wicked" is about looking past an image, not judging books by their covers, and pushing boundaries. It's a story of friendships blossoming in unlikely places, withstanding hardships and differences, and lasting a lifetime.

This is a show you see with your best friends, people you care about. It's a show for everyone, young and old. It's fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously. You have such a good time that it's over too fast, but when you go, you leave feeling hopeful and happy.

It's always a special experience when "Wicked" is at Proctors. There's something about the intimacy of the theater; no seat feels too far away from the stage. I've seen this show at the Apollo Victoria, one of London's largest theaters, and I can honestly say that the experience there is... different. Everything seems a little bigger, but also, a little more disconnected (unless you're sitting in the first few rows of the stalls).

Don't get me wrong, "Wicked" is still great at other theaters. I loved every second of it and I've gone back to the Apollo Victoria multiple times, but it’s different there. It could be a number of other contributing factors: British actors, a largely British audience, changes in staging and words, adapted humoUr (yes, the U is intentional)... or maybe there's something to be said about "Wicked" playing on a stage in the same area where novelist Gregory Maguire grew up. It's just special in Schenectady. (See UAlbany towers inspired "Wicked" video. Click here.)

This touring cast is great. They really are. I just need to say -- I've seen this show on the West End and I've seen it on tour, but I've never seen a better Fiyero than Billy Tighe. He is just wonderful in this part, and anyone who knows me knows how much I love the character Fiyero. In a world of Jean Val Jeans, Phantoms, and Raouls, he's definitely top of my list. It takes a lot for a Fiyero to impress me and Billy's voice just blew me away. Jenna De Waal was also very impressive as Glinda. I'm not a professional but I gather that some of those notes she sings are extremely difficult to hit. Understudy Alyssa Fox was Elphaba at the performance I attended, and she absolutely nailed "Defying Gravity." That's the penultimate song in my book. Nail that and you've won me over.

I took my niece and nephew to this show for the first time at Proctors last Sunday. They're 11 and 9, respectively. They were mesmerized by the production — the story, the music, the dancing, the special effects, how everything comes together. It was wonderful to see it through their eyes, because I could really see the magic.

You have to credit Winnie Holzman for her adaptation and Stephen Schwartz for his music, but we can't forget about the clever re-mastering of a classic tale by Gregory Maguire.

My niece told me she'll never think of the "Wizard of Oz" the same way again. Maybe that's what makes "Wicked" so special. It allows you to question the norm, to think about something you've always believed in, in a different way: A little extra special, perhaps, because the mastermind behind the tale is a local. One of our own.

Readers may recall that Gina Bucciero reported on her experiences at Proctors in a July 2010 blog and then again earlier this year when she returned from England and work in London on the 2012 Olympics Games there. Gina is well-traveled resident of Clifton Park, College of St. Rose graduate, and a proud former intern of Proctors.
