By shining an unflinching light on one court and the lives of five men who play there, <strong>Ballin&rsquo; at the Graveyard</strong> vividly reveals the heart, humor and brotherhood forged on the court, knocking down stereotypes, challenging assumptions and providing a new perspective about African American men along the way.</p><p>The film offers a simple truth that is all but ignored by today&rsquo;s media: the vast majority of black men are good citizens who work hard each day, love their families, mentor those who need it, and give back again and again to their community, with resilience, determination and compassion.</p><p>A surprising, moving story that will challenge what you think you know about the world behind the chain link fence, <strong>Ballin&rsquo; at the Graveyard</strong> serves as a clarion call to a deeper dialogue among people of all cultures.</p><p>&quot;[The film] ZEROES IN ON JUST ONE PARK, IN JUST ONE CITY; BUT LIKE ANY REVEALING STUDY OF A SUBCULTURE, IT HITS ON A FEW UNIVERSAL HUMAN TRUTHS. Tonight&#39;s film is the documentary <strong>Wattstax</strong>.</p><p><strong>Wattstax</strong> the concert was an incredible outpouring of music, soul and the black experience. Staged in the LA Coliseum in the Summer of 1972, it brought together over 100,000 people in a spirit of joy, pride and celebration. Virtually the entire Stax Records roster, including Isaac Hayes, Rufus Thomas and the Staple Singers, put their hearts into performances that matched the magic of the occasion and forged a connection with the crowd which is still revered.</p><div><p><strong>Wattstax</strong> the movie is more than just incredible musical performances. Through topical street interviews on subjects ranging from music and love to politics and the 1965 Watts Revolt, the film provides unexpectedly potent insight into life in Watts. A young relatively unknown Richard Pryor peppers the film with biting wit in a series of standup routines, binding the interviews and musical performances together into a powerful statement on life in Black America.</p><img alt="" src="/sites/proctors.org/files/image/revolution.jpg" style="cursor: default; float: right; width: 125px; height: 94px; " /><h4><em>Live performance before the film by talented students from Schenectady High School,&nbsp;</em><em><strong>Revolution Studios</strong>.</em></h4><p><em>As with all ICFS movie events, prizes, surprises, special guests, and comfy couches will be part of the party.</em></p><table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Rated R</strong></td><td style="text-align: center; "><strong>Running Time<br />98 min</strong></td></tr></tbody></table></div><div class="field field-type-text field-field-ticket-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Ticket Prices: $9, $6 for students</strong> <em>(with ID, not available online)</em></p> </div> </div> </div> <table id="theatermanager_dates"> <tbody> <tr class="vevent odd"><td><div class="placeicon placeGE"><span class="location">GE Theatre at Proctors</span></div></td><td class="summary">Wattstax</td><td><abbr class="dtstart" title="2013-06-20T19:00:00-04:00">Thursday, June 20 - 7:00 pm</abbr></td><td><div class="ticket_button"><a href="https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/95/online?btnSelectEvent&amp;PB_SEQ=16709" class="url"><span>Buy this show</span></a></div></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Movies Fri, 10 May 2013 16:44:13 +0000 8282 at http://www.proctors.org Rocky http://www.proctors.org/events/100-rocky <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-place"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> GE Theatre at Proctors </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-eventstart"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> June&nbsp;1&nbsp;-&nbsp;3 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-event-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/events/100-rocky" class="imagecache imagecache-250_100 imagecache-linked imagecache-250_single"><img src="http://www.proctors.org/sites/proctors.org/files/imagecache/250_100/rocky-1000-qa.jpg" alt="" title="" width="250" height="100" class="imagecache imagecache-250_100"/></a> </div> </div> </div> <h4 style="text-align: center; "><strong>Part of our <a href="/events/film-100">Film 100<br />The American Film Institute Essentials</a></strong></h4><p>Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a Philadelphia boxer, is but one step removed from total bum-hood. Volunteers race against the clock to fly thousands of WWII veterans to Washington, DC to see the memorial constructed for them in 2004, nearly 60 years after their epic struggle.</p><p>The trips are called &ldquo;Honor Flights&rdquo; and for the veterans, who are in their late 80s and early 90s, it&rsquo;s often the first time they&rsquo;ve been thanked and the last trip of their lives. The 24-hour journey is full of surprises that deeply move all who are involved. It&rsquo;s uncommon for World War II veterans to talk about the War, but the Honor Flight experience brings their stories out. It turns out Popeye&#39;s suspicions are right -- Sal and Angie are the New York agents for Charnier, who will be smuggling 32 million dollars&#39; worth of heroin into the city in a car shipped over from France.</p><p><strong>The French Connection</strong> broke plenty of new ground for screen thrillers; Popeye Doyle was a highly unusual &quot;hero,&quot; an often violent, racist, and mean-spirited cop whose dedication to his job fell just short of dangerous obsession. The film&#39;s high point, a high-speed car chase with Popeye tailing an elevated train, was one of the most viscerally exciting screen moments of its day and set the stage for dozens of action sequences to follow.</p><p>And the film&#39;s grimy realism (and downbeat ending) was a big change from the buff-and-shine gloss and good-guys-always-win heroics of most police dramas that preceded it.</p><p><strong>The French Connection</strong> was inspired by a true story, and Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, Popeye and Buddy&#39;s real life counterparts, both have small roles in the film.&nbsp;</p><table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td><b>Rated R</b>.</td><td style="text-align: center; "><strong>Part of our <a href="/events/film-100">Film 100<br /> The American Film Institute Essentials</a></strong></h4><p>An unusually tense and intelligent political thriller, <strong>The Manchurian Candidate</strong> was a film far ahead of its time. Its themes of thought control, political assassination, and multinational conspiracy were hardly common currency in 1962, and while its outlook is sometimes informed by Cold War paranoia, the film seemed nearly as timely when it was reissued in 1987 as it did on its original release.</p><p>It opens with a group of soldiers whooping it up in a bar in Korea as their commander, Sgt. Raymond Shaw (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002131/">Laurence Harvey</a>), arrives to inform them that they&#39;re back on duty. These men obviously have no fondness for Shaw, and he feels no empathy for them. While on patrol, Shaw and his platoon are ambushed by Korean troops.</p><p>Months later, Shaw is receiving a hero&#39;s welcome as he returns to the United States to accept the Congressional Medal of Honor, and several of the soldiers who served under Shaw repeatedly refer to him as &quot;the bravest, finest, most lovable man I ever met.&quot; It soon becomes evident that after their capture by the Koreans, Shaw and his men were subjected to an intense program of brainwashing prior to their release.</p><p>While several are troubled by bad dreams and inexplicable behavior, it&#39;s Capt. Bennett Marco (<a href="http://www.sinatra.com/legacy">Frank Sinatra</a>) who seems the most haunted by the experience. In time, Marco is able to piece together what happened; it seems Raymond Shaw was programmed by a shadowy cadre of Russian and Chinese agents into a killing machine who will assassinate anyone, even a close friend, when given the proper commands.</p><p>On the other side of the coin, Shaw is also used for political gain by his harridan mother (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Lansbury">Angela Lansbury</a>), who guides the career of her second husband, John Iselin (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0339834/">James Gregory</a>), a bone-headed congressman hoping to win the vice-presidential nomination through a campaign of anti-Communist hysteria.</p><p><strong>The Manchurian Candidate</strong> features a host of remarkable performances, several from actors cast cleverly against type. Frank Sinatra&#39;s edgy, aggressive turn as Marco may be the finest dramatic work of his career; Laurence Harvey&#39;s chilly onscreen demeanor was rarely used to a better advantage than as Raymond Shaw; James Gregory is great as the oft-befuddled Senator Iselin; and Angela Lansbury&#39;s ultimate bad mom will be a shock to those who know her as the lovable mystery writer from <em>Murder, She Wrote</em>.</p><p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Axelrod">George Axelrod</a>&#39;s screenplay (based on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Condon">Richard Condon</a>&#39;s novel) is by turns compelling, witty, and horrifying in its implications, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Frankenheimer">John Frankenheimer</a>&#39;s direction milks it for all the tension it can muster. While Frankenheimer&#39;s career has had its ups and downs, <strong>The Manchurian Candidate</strong> and <em>Seconds</em> (1966) suggest that he deserves to be recognized as one of the most brilliantly paranoid American filmmakers of the &#39;60s. Entertaining yet unsettling, both films indicate that things in the &#39;60s were not what they seemed, with a resonance that still echoes uncomfortably in the present.&nbsp;</p><table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td><b>Rated PG-13</b></td><td style="text-align: center; "><strong>Running Time<br /> 126 min</strong></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="field field-type-text field-field-ticket-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Ticket Price: $5</strong><br /> <strong>The Film 100 pass:</strong> Just <strong>$100</strong> for a personal pass to the entire series!<br /> <em>(please pick up your pass at the Box Office)</em></p> </div> </div> </div> <table id="theatermanager_dates"> <tbody> <tr class="vevent odd"><td><div class="placeicon placeGE"><span class="location">GE Theatre at Proctors</span></div></td><td class="summary">The Manchurian Candidate</td><td><abbr class="dtstart" title="2013-06-17T13:30:00-04:00">Monday, June 17 - 1:30 pm</abbr></td><td><div class="ticket_button"><a href="https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/95/online?btnSelectEvent&amp;PB_SEQ=15441" class="url"><span>Buy this show</span></a></div></td> </tr> <tr class="vevent even"><td><div class="placeicon placeGE"><span class="location">GE Theatre at Proctors</span></div></td><td class="summary">The Manchurian Candidate</td><td><abbr class="dtstart" title="2013-06-17T16:30:00-04:00">Monday, June 17 - 4:30 pm</abbr></td><td><div class="ticket_button"><a href="https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/95/online?btnSelectEvent&amp;PB_SEQ=15442" class="url"><span>Buy this show</span></a></div></td> </tr> <tr class="vevent odd"><td><div class="placeicon placeGE"><span class="location">GE Theatre at Proctors</span></div></td><td class="summary">The Manchurian Candidate</td><td><abbr class="dtstart" title="2013-06-17T19:30:00-04:00">Monday, June 17 - 7:30 pm</abbr></td><td><div class="ticket_button"><a href="https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/95/online?btnSelectEvent&amp;PB_SEQ=15443" class="url"><span>Buy this show</span></a></div></td> </tr> <tr class="vevent even"><td><div class="placeicon placeGE"><span class="location">GE Theatre at Proctors</span></div></td><td class="summary">Film 100 Pass</td><td><abbr class="dtstart" title="2014-12-31T19:30:00-05:00">Wednesday, December 31 - 7:30 pm</abbr></td><td><div class="ticket_button"><a href="https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/95/online?btnSelectEvent&amp;PB_SEQ=15378" class="url"><span>Buy this show</span></a></div></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Movies Mon, 01 Apr 2013 14:28:40 +0000 8176 at http://www.proctors.org Shane http://www.proctors.org/events/shane <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-place"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> GE Theatre at Proctors </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-eventstart"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Monday,&nbsp;June&nbsp;10 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-event-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/events/shane" class="imagecache imagecache-250_100 imagecache-linked imagecache-250_single"><img src="http://www.proctors.org/sites/proctors.org/files/imagecache/250_100/shane-1000.jpg" alt="" title="" width="250" height="100" class="imagecache imagecache-250_100"/></a> </div> </div> </div> <h4 style="text-align: center; "><strong>Part of our <a href="/events/film-100">Film 100<br /> The American Film Institute Essentials</a></strong></h4><p>The simple story of a Wyoming range war is elevated to near-mythical status in producer/director <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0828419/">George Stevens</a>&#39; Western classic <strong>Shane</strong>.</p><p><a href="http://www.cmgww.com/stars/ladd/">Alan Ladd</a> plays the title character, a mysterious drifter who rides into a tiny homesteading community and accepts the hospitality of a farming family. Patriarch Joe Starrett (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001336/">Van Heflin</a>) is impressed by the way Shane handles himself when facing down the hostile minions of land baron Emile Meyer, though he has trouble placing his complete trust in the stranger, as his Marion (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000795/">Jean Arthur</a>) is attracted to Shane in spite of herself, and his son Joey (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001121/">Brandon De Wilde</a>) flat-out idolizes Shane.</p><p>When Meyer is unable to drive off the homesteaders by sheer brute strength, he engages the services of black-clad, wholly evil hired gun Jack Wilson (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001588/">Jack Palance</a>). The moment that Wilson shows he means business by shooting down hotheaded farmer Frank Torrey (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0176879/">Elisha Cook Jr.</a>) is the film&#39;s most memorable scene: after years of becoming accustomed to carefully choreographed movie death scenes, the suddenness with which Torrey&#39;s life is snuffed out -- and the force with which he falls to the ground -- are startling.</p><p>Shane knows that a showdown with Wilson is inevitable; he also knows that, unintentionally, he has become a disruptive element in the Starrett family. The manner in which he handles both these problems segues into the now-legendary &quot;Come back, Shane&quot; finale.</p><p>Cinematographer <a href="http://www.cinematographers.nl/GreatDoPh/griggs.htm">Loyal Griggs</a> imbues this no-frills tale with the outer trappings of an epic, forever framing the action in relation to the unspoiled land surrounding it. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._B._Guthrie,_Jr.">A.B. Guthrie Jr.</a>&#39;s screenplay, adapted from the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Schaefer">Jack Schaefer</a> novel, avoids the standard good guy/bad guy clichés: both homesteaders and cattlemen are shown as three-dimensional human beings, flaws and all, and even ostensible villain Emile Meyer comes off reasonable and logical when elucidating his dislike of the &quot;newcomers&quot; who threaten to divest him of his wide open spaces.&nbsp;</p><table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td><b>Unrated</b>.</td><td style="text-align: center; "><strong>Running Time<br /> 118 min</strong></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="field field-type-text field-field-ticket-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Ticket Price: $5</strong><br /> <strong>The Film 100 pass:</strong> Just <strong>$100</strong> for a personal pass to the entire series!<br /> <em>(please pick up your pass at the Box Office)</em></p> </div> </div> </div> <table id="theatermanager_dates"> <tbody> <tr class="vevent odd"><td><div class="placeicon placeGE"><span class="location">GE Theatre at Proctors</span></div></td><td class="summary">Shane</td><td><abbr class="dtstart" title="2013-06-10T14:30:00-04:00">Monday, June 10 - 2:30 pm</abbr></td><td><div class="ticket_button"><a href="https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/95/online?btnSelectEvent&amp;PB_SEQ=15527" class="url"><span>Buy this show</span></a></div></td> </tr> <tr class="vevent even"><td><div class="placeicon placeGE"><span class="location">GE Theatre at Proctors</span></div></td><td class="summary">Shane</td><td><abbr class="dtstart" title="2013-06-10T17:00:00-04:00">Monday, June 10 - 5:00 pm</abbr></td><td><div class="ticket_button"><a href="https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/95/online?btnSelectEvent&amp;PB_SEQ=15528" class="url"><span>Buy this show</span></a></div></td> </tr> <tr class="vevent odd"><td><div class="placeicon placeGE"><span class="location">GE Theatre at Proctors</span></div></td><td class="summary">Shane</td><td><abbr class="dtstart" title="2013-06-10T19:30:00-04:00">Monday, June 10 - 7:30 pm</abbr></td><td><div class="ticket_button"><a href="https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/95/online?btnSelectEvent&amp;PB_SEQ=15529" class="url"><span>Buy this show</span></a></div></td> </tr> <tr class="vevent even"><td><div class="placeicon placeGE"><span class="location">GE Theatre at Proctors</span></div></td><td class="summary">Film 100 Pass</td><td><abbr class="dtstart" title="2014-12-31T19:30:00-05:00">Wednesday, December 31 - 7:30 pm</abbr></td><td><div class="ticket_button"><a href="https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/95/online?btnSelectEvent&amp;PB_SEQ=15378" class="url"><span>Buy this show</span></a></div></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Movies Mon, 01 Apr 2013 12:29:43 +0000 8175 at http://www.proctors.org FILM 100: The American Film Institute Essentials http://www.proctors.org/events/film-100 <div class="field field-type-date field-field-eventstart"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> September&nbsp;17,&nbsp;2012&nbsp;-&nbsp;August&nbsp;25,&nbsp;2014 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-event-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/events/film-100" class="imagecache imagecache-250_100 imagecache-linked imagecache-250_single"><img src="http://www.proctors.org/sites/proctors.org/files/imagecache/250_100/film-1000_0.jpg" alt="" title="" width="250" height="100" class="imagecache imagecache-250_100"/></a> </div> </div> </div> <h4 style="text-align: center; "><em><strong>Proctors was built for movies.</strong></em></h4><p>86 years ago, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017434/"><em>Stranded in Paris</em></a> opened the doors on the grand movie house and began the octogenarial love affair between the Capital Region and Movies at Proctors.
