Pastor Elgin Joseph Taylor, Sr. is a native of Albany, New York, son of Joseph M. Taylor and the late Dematress L. Gailliard-Taylor. Born in a Christian home as well as into a family of musicians, at the age of six, he likewise gifted with the ministry of music as his mother, paternal grandmother and maternal great-grandmother, who were all musicians.
Pastor Taylor was educated in the Albany Public School System and graduated from Albany High School, June 1982 with the Harriett Sacca Award for Music Excellence. In 1985 he graduated from Albany Business College with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing. Currently Pastor Taylor is enrolled in the DLS Minister’s Certificate Program of the Wise School of Ministry of Columbus, Ohio. For the past 26 years Pastor Taylor has been employed at the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, where he currently holds the position of Director of the Office of Affirmative Action Programs.
Celebrating 33 years in music ministry as a Minister of Music, Pastor Taylor faithfully served as the Minister of Music of the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church of Albany, where 6 generations of his family were faithful disciples. Pastor Taylor joined the fellowship of Morning Star Baptist Church and was baptized at the age of 7, under the pastorate of the late Reverend Dr. Moses S. Hunter. As a result his faithfulness to God and His people, Pastor Taylor was ordained a Deacon December 1985 and faithfully served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons 9 years. In addition to serving at Morning Star, Pastor Taylor served as Director of Music at the Israel AME Church of Albany, NY 1978-1985 and a Director of Music at the Metropolitan New Testament Mission Baptist Church of Albany 1982 - 1985.
In the greater Capital District region, Pastor Taylor is well known and has been dedicated to serving God and His people. For the past 27 years Pastor Taylor has faithfully served as Director of Music of the Empire Baptist Missionary Convention, where he also currently serves as Assistant Corresponding Secretary of the Parent Body, Director General of the Congress of Christian Education and immediate Past President of the Young People’s Auxiliary. Pastor Taylor is active in the Hudson River Frontier Missionary Baptist Association, Inc., having served as Director of Music, President of the Young People’s Department and President of the Sunday School and BTU Auxiliary, currently serving as Director of Finance of the Association. Likewise in the Central Hudson Baptist Association, Pastor Taylor served as Director of Music and Vice President of the Congress of Christian Education. Whatever task given, Pastor Taylor has remained a faithful servant.
Pastor Taylor accepted his call to the Gospel Ministry, June 2005 and preached his initial sermon entitled “Where Are the Worshippers,” Sunday, October 16, 2005. By a unanimous vote to the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Taylor was and was licensed to the Gospel Ministry. May 7, 2006, Pastor Taylor joined the fellowship of the Shiloh Baptist Church of Hudson, New York, under the pastorate of the Reverend Ronald Grant. At Shiloh, Pastor Taylor was actively engaged in ministry and the total program of the Church, serving as an Associate Minister and Executive Minister to the Pastor, in addition to the Minister of Music.
February 6, 2010, at the request of Reverend Ronald Grant and the Shiloh Baptist Church, Pastor Taylor was catechized by the Central Hudson Baptist Association of New York, Inc, at which time he was recommended for ordination to the Gospel Ministry. Saturday, March 6, 2010, on his birthday, Pastor Taylor was ordained to the Gospel Ministry at the Shiloh Baptist Church of Hudson, New York, by unanimous vote of the Church.

In the fullness of time, as God deemed it so, Monday, March 22, 2010, the membership of the Sweet Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church of Albany, New York, said yes to that which God had ordained, electing the Reverend Elgin Joseph Taylor, Sr. as their 7th pastor. Pastor Taylor for the past two years has faithfully led the disciples of Sweet Pilgrim to higher heights and deeper depths in ministry.
Pastor Taylor is the proud father of one son, Elgin Joseph Taylor II. Pastor lives and believes as he quotes: “we have full confidence that all things will work together for our good, because we love God and are the called, according to His purpose.” What God ordained, He will maintain. God be praised!
