Walking Tours of Proctors

Proctors Tours

In addition to our free monthly tour*, join us on Sunday, March 19th at 10:00 A.M. for our annual Birthday Tour, celebrating Frederick Freeman Proctor.
Frederick Freeman Proctor was born on St. Patrick's Day in the year 1851 and for the past several years the theater has been celebrating his Birthday with a free public tour complete with refreshments for everyone attending.
The tour will begin with a short talk about Mr. Proctor's life and the history of our theater that is currently celebrating its 90th year.
Immediately following the talk, participants will be broken up into groups of 20 to begin their tour through the entire theater. While waiting for their tour to begin, homemade baked goods and beverages will be served and a video will be running with interesting interviews with staff, volunteers and people important both currently and through the many years to the theater's longevity.
Included in the walking tour will be the stage, cross over area, all dressing rooms and the mezzanine.
The tour will begin at 10:00 AM sharp and guides will be present to start welcoming guests in front of the main theater doors in the arcade. Both the tour and refreshments are free and no reservations are required.

*A wonderful way to learn more about our magnificent theatre is to take a tour. Free tours are available for groups as large as 300 or as small as two people. We are able to accommodate those with disabilities including wheelchair bound. Tours have been provided for reunions, wedding receptions, seniors, all school groups…possibilities are limitless. For contact information, please call the Proctor’s box office.

A free tour is available each month following the Tuesday noon time organ concerts held in the Main Theatre.

No reservations are necessary for the monthly tours. Public tours are scheduled throughout the year on the weekend. No advance registration is necessary and will be noted on our website. The length of a tour can be adapted to your group’s needs and can last about an hour or more as requested.

Tours include history of both the theatre and FF Proctor, the extraordinary entrepreneur responsible for this “Palace for the People”. You will see the gorgeous theatre from an insider’s view. This includes the main theatre from the stage and backstage, dressing rooms and all those special places you have always been curious about. Other areas you may see on your tour are the surprising number of venues under this one roof. These include the GE Theatre, The Atrium, Key Hall, the Theatre Museum, the Historic Arcade, Open Stage Media Recording Studio, The Education Center, The Schenectady Visitors Center, among others.

We are full of surprises you might not know exist in this special place. Come let us share with you the magic of the theatre from a new perspective. Tour facilitation is under the supervision of Marilyn Sassi, privatetours@proctors.org, historian extraordinaire.

Join us for our Annual Public Tour of Proctors on March 6.
