ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930)
This legendary classic follows a group of German schoolboys talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War I by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young recruits, and – as the boys witness death and worse around them – any preconceptions they had about “the enemy,” and also of the “rights and wrongs” of the conflict, begin to disappear. This early war film is not about heroism, but about drudgery and futility… and about the gulf between the concept of war and its actuality. Not Rated. 136 minutes.
