BLINDED BY THE LIGHT
Having won the Truly Moving Picture Award at the Heartland Film festival (as well as thePaul Mazursky Award at Michael Moore’s Traverse City Film Festival), Blinded By The Light has been rather unfairly compared to Yesterday. This is not a case of “been there, done that,” however. A British teen of Pakistani descent grows up in 1987 England amidst racial and economic turmoil. He writes poetry as a means to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the inflexibility of his traditional father. When a classmate introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteen, he discovers parallels to his working-class life in the powerful lyrics, not only giving him an outlet for his pent-up dreams, but also allowing him to begin to express himself in his own voice. Rated PG-13 for thematic material and language incl. some ethnic slurs. 118 min.
