ICFS presents films from the American Genre Film Archive
Dario Argento’s DEEP RED (Newly Restored!)
The 2nd of the films in It Came From Schenectady’s partnership with AGFA comes from a director who – like BLOOD AND BLACK LACE’s Mario Bava – is known for his use of vibrant color. And here bloody Valentine red is primary! During a conference on the paranormal, a renowned psychic claims to have inadvertently channeled the thoughts of a killer in the audience, and soon after, she winds up brutally murdered. A jazz pianist (David Hemmings) is witness to the murder, and feeling compelled to solve the horrible crime (shades of Blow-Up?), teams up with a feisty reporter (Daria Nicolodi), only to discover themselves seemingly pursued by an unseen assailant who appears to know their every move. Filmed immediately prior to his delirious SUSPIRIA, Argento’s DEEP RED is widely considered to be the director’s masterpiece. While both films are breathtakingly stylish and feature astonishing murder set pieces, DEEP RED pays far more attention to the conventions of narrative. Like SUSPIRIA, it is also driven by an absolutely fantastic prog rock GOBLIN score. Not Rated. 98 minutes. As with other ICFS events, expect prizes, surprises, comfy couches and absolutely killer drink specials!
