1968, two young Catholic nuns crisscrossed Chicago, from a supermarket to the Art Institute to church on Sunday, in order to ask random strangers the question, “Are you happy?” Among the many people they meet are a lonely girl, a happy mother, two hippie musicians, a sociologist and even Stepin Fetchit. The humor and sadness of their honest encounters lift this to the level of a serious and moving inquiry into the concerns of contemporary man… and also the circumstances within which men will actually express their concerns. Newly restored for its 50th anniversary, Inquiring Nuns features the music of Philip Glass in his very first credited film score. Not rated. 60 minutes.
