Shaw Brothers’  CRIPPLED AVENGERS (aka Return of the Five Deadly Venoms)

The stars of director Chang Cheh’ famed Five Deadly Venoms return in one of his most delightful efforts. Early in a career comprising nearly 100 films, Chang shocked audiences with One-Armed Swordsman, now recognized as a martial arts classic about overcoming a severe physical handicap. With Crippled Avengers, his 66th film, Chang upped the ante considerably featuring several characters with seeming disabilities who – only by working with one another and combining their strengths –  can they hope to bring  justice to their foes (foes – who, in this case – are former victims themselves, transformed into bitter victimizers).  It is (of course!) in the elaborate, clever and/or acrobatic training sequences that the films fun takes full flight, with Chang – as usual – careful to capture the martial artists impressive physicality – and beautifully choreographed stunts – in spectacularly revealing wide shots. In Mandarin with English subtitles. Not rated. 107 minutes.

As with other ICFS events, expect prizes, surprises, comfy couches and absolutely dazzling drink specials!
