Tobe Hooper’s EATEN ALIVE

Like his earlier TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, Tobe Hooper’s follow-up was loosely based on a true crime tale, in this case… the terrifying legend of Joe “The Alligator Man” Ball.  When several women close to Ball – including an employee, a wife, and a couple of girlfriends – all disappeared, suspicion naturally fell on Ball, an ex-con who owned a live Alligator attraction in 1930’s Texas.  Can you say “feeding time?”  LikeCHAIN SAW, this film is decidedly ugly, yet deliriously effective.  Unlike CHAIN SAW, time has not softened the movies edges. Neville Brand, Roberta Collins, Robert Englund, William Finley, and Marilyn Burns all star.  Rated R for Revolting.  91 minutes.
